BPPV

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

Is the Room Spinning When You Move Your Head?

It could be BPPV – and it’s treatable.

A common but misunderstood cause of vertigo, BPPV can affect your balance, sleep, and daily life. Dr. Peerbaccus offers targeted diagnosis and repositioning therapy in Mauritius.

What is BPPV?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo. It occurs when tiny calcium particles in your inner ear (called otoconia) shift out of place, sending false balance signals to your brain.

Benign – Not life-threatening
Paroxysmal – Sudden onset
Positional – Triggered by head position

Common Symptoms of BPPV

🌀 Brief episodes of spinning (vertigo)
🛌 Triggered when lying down or turning over in bed
📉 Imbalance or unsteadiness when walking
😵 Lightheadedness when tilting your head
🤮 Sometimes accompanied by nausea

How BPPV is Diagnosed

Dr. Peerbaccus performs a clinical vestibular evaluation, which may include:

Dix-Hallpike test to trigger and observe eye movements (nystagmus)
Balance & neurological assessments
Ruling out other inner ear or brain-related causes

📍 No imaging is usually needed — diagnosis is made during consultation.

Treatment Options

Treatment for BPPV is simple and highly effective.

✅ Repositioning Maneuvers
(such as the Epley Maneuver) to guide particles back into place
🧘‍♂️ Balance training if symptoms persist
🕒 Most patients feel relief after 1–2 sessions
